The Dream Team

A career highlight was the opportunity to be apart of the design team for the Health Care Foundation Hospital Home Lottery.  During her time with Elite Kitchens + Design as the lead cabinetry designer, Krista working with the HCF design team to design five of the lottery home kitchens, bathrooms and build ins.

designing without a client

The HCF Hospital Home Lottery houses were seen by tens of thousands of people and were often the design inspiration for those who viewed the home.  Thinking outside the box, be trend setting forward to create designs that would both appeal to the masses while pushing the envelope forward in both design and style were how the projects were approached.  The lead designer would create a fictitious family persona that she would then based the designed the home around. Every designer, trade and supplier all came together each year to produce a house that fund raised millions for adult health care in Newfoundland.

This years home was more on the traditional style.  Playing off the other design elements of the home, we went with cream color painted cabinets with a traditional raised panel door style.  With the high ceilings of the home, bringing the cabinetry to the ceiling brought a sense of grandeur to the space and allowed the eye to follow up. The lit glass top cabinetry was a great place to add a place to display decor.  The island featured a glaze finish which pulled out the tones of the stunning, thick butcher block top.

The same traditional style was repeated throughout the home.  A warm wood tone freestanding vanity in the master en suite added a touch of elegance to the space.  The laundry room was a dream space with the built in cabinets in a mid tone gray.  The rich wood built in bookcases were every reader and book collectors dream.  The same arched detail was repeated in this sitting room as in the kitchen custom rangehood and over the sink.

A more ultra modern approach was taken with this home.  A mixture of grays, off-whites and taupe were widely used throughout the home.  The kitchen featured a custom painted glazed finish in a mid tone charcoal grey.  The off white island, quartz counter tops and backsplash really made the cabinet finish pop.  With a more modern design, we pulled out all the stops and really tricked out this kitchen.

The upper line of cabinets frosted glass doors were equipped with touch to open lift up doors, as were all the lower cabinet drawers.  This allowed the cabinets to be handle free and be ultra sleek.  The bathrooms all had floating vanities.  By floating the vanity off the floor, it allows the eye to travel under and gives the appearance of more floor space.  Which is a must in smaller spaces such as bathrooms.

We kept with a more modern style in this years design, but brought in more warmer wood tones to contrast against the white cabinets.  The upper cabinets all had lift up doors and the base cabinets were all drawers to keep inline with the sleekness of  modern styling.  The island was really the center piece of this space.  Having the seating raised section with a strong architectural lines in the pop of dark wood also tied in the open shelving unit facing you as you entered the kitchen.  On the back of the island was an 18 bottle custom wine rack for both wine storage and display.

The appliances really stole the show.  The large 60" fridge and freeze combo was build into a wall of cabinetry where we also squeezed in a flat screen tv above the wall oven, which was framed out to look completely seamless.  This kitchen quickly became a favorite among many.  In the ensuite we had a back lit mirror and down lighting under the floating vanity.  The sleek white vanity against the dark tile was stunning, with wall mount faucets were to really create a sleek modern look in the space.

This home was all about the warm wood tones, open shelving while creating an airness with lighter floors and accents.  The island had a unique shape to maximize the size of the island with the restrictions of the walkway into the kitchen.  So, a island with an offset 140 degree angle was the solution.  To really accent this unique shape, we paired the matte black granite tops with the warm tones of the butcher block top, which followed that offset angle.  The marriage of the two material was the inspiration for the two tone wood of the cabinetry.  Drawers were widely used to maximize usable storage and lighting both accented the unique details build within the kitchen and was used as task lighting.

The finishes and styling of the kitchen was continued throughout the bathrooms, keeping with the simplistic styling in the warm, dark wood tones, use of drawers and white accents.   Each bathroom still had a uniqueness to them with the simple details making each its own.

The location of this lottery home overlooked beautiful Conception Bay.  With this in mind the design team went with a coastal style.  We went very clean lined with the cabinetry and used the warm natural tones of white quarter-sawn oak to create texture and accented it with a pop of painted white cabinetry which create depth.  The white was continued with the quartz counter tops & backsplash creating a seamless look.  The horizontal lines of the oak grain doors were cut in a book match to the previous door so the grain ran continuously across each section of cabinetry.

In bathrooms the same clean lines and white cabinetry and counter tops continued.  In the ensuite, the vanity floated off the floor and recessed handles were used to create a unique detailing accented in chrome.  The main bath we added a thin border on the doors to soften the look and used legs to achieve a furniture look.

Every Room in this house had that spectacular view and the cabinetry played second fiddle to the view.  The layout of the kitchen took in the view of the ocean from all angles. But that didn't mean we held back on the details or the features in the cabinetry.  The end result was classic, suttle and functional.
